What you do after the interview can reinforce a positive impression or salvage a mediocre one. Follow-up is your chance to stay memorable.

The Thank You Email

Timing

• Send within 24 hours of the interview
• Same day is ideal for morning interviews
• Send individual emails to each interviewer

Structure

1. Express appreciation for their time
2. Reference something specific from your conversation
3. Reinforce your interest and fit
4. Offer to provide additional information

Example Template

"Hi [Name],

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today about the [Role] position. I enjoyed learning about [specific topic from conversation].

Our discussion reinforced my enthusiasm for joining [Company]. I'm particularly excited about [specific opportunity or challenge mentioned].

I believe my experience with [relevant skill] would enable me to make a meaningful contribution to [team goal discussed].

Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. I look forward to hearing from you.

What to Personalize

• Specific topics you discussed
• Questions they asked that you want to elaborate on
• Connection points you found
• Something you forgot to mention

Following Up on Timeline

• Wait until the timeline they gave has passed
• Send a brief, polite check-in
• Reiterate interest without being pushy
• One follow-up is acceptable; multiple can be annoying

If You Don't Get the Job

• Thank them for the opportunity
• Ask for feedback (they may or may not provide it)
• Keep the door open for future opportunities
